after the president was finished, house speaker john boehner held a press conference, and he left unanswered the president's call for decoupling that 98% from the richest 2%, and he gave a pessimistic assessment of the situation. let's listen to mr. boehner. >> there's a stalemate. let's not kid ourselves. when i come out the day after the election and make it clear that republicans will put revenue on the table, i took a great risk. and then the white house spent three weeks trying to develop a proposal, and they send one up here that calls for $1.6 trillion in new taxes, calls for a little -- not even $400 billion in cuts, and they want to have this extra spending that's actually greater than the amount they're willing to cut. i mean, it was not a serious proposal. and so right now we're almost nowhere. >> let me start with -- let me start with joy on this thing because you and i often agree. if we don't, we don't, and we'll live with that. but this whole thing here, i think boehner has never accepted the fact that the rates have to go up at the top. there's something about dedu

to the closing bell" starts right now. you heard it from the horses mouth. and it has gyrated the market. john boehner said no substantial progress on fiscal cliff debt deal while harry reid insists we democrats are on track and will finalize it this year. even chuck schumer weighed in saying progress is being made on the hill and the next is a taste oversensitive. take a look at the intraday, you can see how it was jerked around today. right around 11:30 a.m., speaker john maye -- john boehner spoke. the buyers poured in, the short time later chuck schumer came in. now we are trading near the highs of the day. the dow jones dust they stop 77 points, 45 to the upside. all 10 s. and p. sectors are jumping with technologies leading the way. research in motion a big winner. can you believe the stock is near $12 per share. rim was at $6 per share, but positive comments out of goldman sachs fueling the game. apple in the green continuing the postelection resurgence. apple was in bear market correction level just a few weeks ago, but right now jumping about 1%. disappointing november sales numbers.

. but a few days ago john boehner said something very, very telling. he told politico, quote, which is a place for everything. hold everything. there is a price for everything. that, ladies and gentlemen is transactional politics at its finest. what will you give me to get what you want? so, today president obama dispatched his top economic advisor, his deputy to find out exactly what that price is. and that's treasury secretary timothy geithner net with the top four congressional leaders pelosi, ma con el, mcconnell and reid and he brought a specific plan from the white house with him. that plan from the president in trying to resolve the fiscal cliff asks for, $1.6 trillion in new revenue. and that's supposed to come from raising taxes on the wealthiest. the president's plan asks for an extension of the payroll tax cut. and an extension of unemployment insurance benefits. it asks for a deferral of those automatic sequester cuts to defense spending and to local -- to domestic spend being. and it also asks, i love this o

from john boehner, i am flabbergasted by the budget which they put forward, which is basically paul ryan's budget right? >> more or less. i mean it's basically a repeat. they come up with revenues but they won't touch tax rates, and they don't really say how they get the revenues. they would get it from what they call loopholes, deductions. they don't specify where it would come from, so really it's a combination of the ryan budget, and what romney -- governor romney began to say toward the end of the election when he was worried a they were being tabbed as the party of the very wealthy, so he said well, we won't lower taxes on the very wealthy, because we'll get ahold of loop holds and deductions but they never said what they were and they continue to evade. but mainly they evade the basic question, are we going to keep the high income tax breaks or are we not? and if they insist on keeping them, they are going to take themselves and the country over the cliff. >> stephanie: uh-huh. this is -- we have been saying -- i don't think this is fooling anybody. th

listen. what were they looking at versus what i was looking at. they were looking at john carter, i was looking at the new bond movie. one after another, they were all down beat. is the expansion too rapid? whether demand for expensive coffee is there. i was waiting for a guy to say, listen, that triple cappuccino it stinks. if i were howard, i would tell them to take a hike. they were too negative versus what the company's up to. opportunity. starbucks was actually down. one time -- i have the apple ipad, you know, thing i'm like, wow, it's under 50. i mean, wow. terrific opportunity. ipad, i mentioned it, surprised one didn't come down and hit me over the head and knock me out. apple. if we're going off the fiscal cliff, we know capital gains tax rates are going higher, right? right? that's obvious. do you think the republicans have the power to keep those capital gains rates down? apple's become a referendum on the president's power. right now he has the upper hand, then he can really roll them and intends to do so. it's reasonable to take some profits so you can pay the tax man
